The chart below shows three different types of crime in England and Wales from 1970 to 2005.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.

Task 1 – Sample Answer

The line graph illustrates the number of incidents for three types of crimes—car theft, burglary, and robbery—in England and Wales between 1970 and 2005.

Overall, car theft was the most common crime throughout the period, while robbery remained the least frequent. Burglary experienced a significant increase initially but declined steadily after its peak.

Car theft began at around 0.4 million cases in 1970 and rose consistently, reaching a peak of approximately 1.6 million incidents by 1995. After this, the number declined slightly, finishing at about 1 million in 2005. In contrast, burglary started at about 0.2 million and saw a sharp rise until 1980, when it reached nearly 1 million. From that point onwards, the figure fluctuated but generally declined, ending at around 0.5 million.

Robbery was the least reported crime, beginning with only 0.01 million cases in 1970. Although the trend was upward, the numbers remained relatively low, reaching 0.2 million by 2000 and remaining stable until 2005.

In summary, car theft showed the highest and most consistent numbers, while robbery was rare but slightly increased, and burglary showed a rise followed by a long-term decrease.

Some people believe that to reduce crime, criminals should be given longer prison sentences.

Task 2 – Sample Answer (Band 7.5+)

Some people believe that to reduce crime, criminals should be given longer prison sentences. Others, however, think there are better alternatives to reduce crime.

Crime prevention is a major concern for every society. While some argue that longer prison sentences are the best way to reduce crime, others believe that alternative methods such as education, rehabilitation, and community programs may be more effective. This essay will discuss both perspectives before giving a personal viewpoint.

Supporters of longer prison terms argue that they act as a deterrent. When criminals know that they could face many years in jail, they might think twice before committing a crime. Furthermore, keeping dangerous criminals behind bars for longer periods helps protect society and reduces the chances of reoffending.

On the other hand, opponents believe that simply increasing the length of sentences does not address the root causes of crime. Many people turn to crime due to poverty, lack of education, or social exclusion. In such cases, rehabilitation programs, job training, and counseling could help them reintegrate into society. For example, countries like Norway focus on education and reintegration rather than punishment, and they have some of the lowest crime rates in the world.

In my opinion, while longer sentences may be necessary for serious offenses like murder or terrorism, they are not the only solution. A balanced approach that includes prevention, rehabilitation, and social support is more effective in the long run.

In conclusion, reducing crime requires more than just longer prison terms. Understanding and addressing the root causes can create a safer and more just society.
